BI Dashboard & Reporting Integration

Customised BI reporting dashboard displays granular safety and compliance results. Power automate is used to send high level weekly summaries to management for action.

About

SMARTbrief is a m-learning platform. It broadcasts video and document briefs to IOS and Android devices to transform operational, safety and customer experience communications across your mobile workforce. Launched a few years ago SMARTbrief has a growing customer base of organisations, primarily in the rail and transport industry. Recently Microsoft Power BI dashboards have been integrated to enhance interactive reporting.

Thank you to the Objective team. The SMARTbrief customised Power BI reporting for MTR Elizabeth Line is much appreciated and working well.
Kamrul Islam, Senior Service Delivery Officer, MTR Elizabeth Line

The Challenge

Video and Document briefs are uploaded and broadcast to app users via the SMARTbrief portal. Statistical reporting was available from day one, allowing Client Administrators to assess number of watched/read briefs to meet compliance and audit thresholds. Depth of user understanding is monitored via Accept/Decline buttons, additionally users can rate briefs out of five stars and provide constructive feedback comments.

To take management reporting to an interactive level; Microsoft Power BI dashboards now underpin a new optional Reporting module.

The Solution

Business Intelligence benchmark reporting dashboards are available to all SMARTbrief clients with a Microsoft Power BI pro licence.

The main consultancy and support focus was needed on Microsoft Azure Data Factory, a fully managed serverless data integration service, streamlining processes and improving SQL queries.

This enables clients to explore briefs broadcast, user response highlights and drill through into the supporting data, such as:

  • Briefs issued and watched/viewed in a selected date range, Priority: High, Medium, Low
  • Briefs issued per User Group, ability to drill into individual users’ response
  • Briefs issued per subject Library to gauge engagement and understanding

Customised reporting option

MTR Elizabeth Line took advantage of custom development to request an automated weekly report, emailed to management.

To begin, we conducted an exploration meeting with a Senior Service Delivery Officer at MTR Elizabeth Line (MTR) to better understand the exact information needed and their preferred layout. The requirement included highlighting individual users and their assigned briefings which have / haven’t been acknowledged, and tracking comments.

Data scientists at Objective queried the SMARTbrief SQL database, to pull the relevant information into Power BI. They then developed the Power BI report with easy-to-understand KPI’s alongside charts, with the ability to delve into the KPI’s in more detail.

A dashboard review meeting with MTR followed, along with guidance regarding what Power BI licensing was required and how it works before the project was completed by setting up a weekly email schedule to send the reports to the assigned managers.

The Results & Benefits

  • Instant, up-to-date views – real time reporting dashboard with ability to drill through into more granular details
  • Personalised – customised reporting to exact requirements, including weekly email summary
  • Development expertise – focused development team, listening to client feedback to continually enhance SMARTbrief
